Buying an Older House: Repairs to Investigate
Older homes can offer character and charm. Understanding the condition of their major systems helps you plan what needs attention now and what can wait.
Newsletter shared by Bryan Driscoll, REALTOR® | Coldwell Banker Momentum Realty, Brokerage.
Start with the inspection findings
The accompanying newsletter covers five areas to discuss with your home inspector and the appropriate qualified professionals:
- Roofing, heating and cooling: Ask about condition, age and potential replacement needs.
- Foundation cracks and sloping floors: Find out whether observed issues need further investigation.
- Plumbing and electrical systems: Ask what materials and systems are present, and what previous renovations actually changed.
- Older windows: Consider their condition and operation when planning improvements.
- Other inspection concerns: Ask about any recommendations for further investigation of moisture, mould or potentially hazardous materials.
Use the findings to ask better questions and build a realistic repair budget. The newsletter is general information, not an assessment of a particular home.
