Create a clean printable receipt for a tenancy payment. Ontario’s Residential Tenancies Act requires a landlord to provide a receipt, free of charge, when a tenant or former tenant requests one for rent, a rent deposit, arrears or another amount paid to the landlord.

Ontario Rent Receipt Rules

Section 109 of Ontario’s Residential Tenancies Act requires a landlord to provide, free of charge and on request, a receipt for payment of rent, a rent deposit, arrears of rent or another amount paid to the landlord. The obligation also applies when a former tenant makes a request within 12 months after the tenancy ends.

Good Record-Keeping Practice

  • Identify the rental property and payer.
  • State the amount and date received.
  • Describe what the payment was for.
  • Keep a copy with the tenancy records.
  • Do not use a receipt as a substitute for a proper rent ledger or lease documentation.
