What to record

A useful rent ledger normally records the rental period, amount charged, date and amount of each payment, and a running balance. Keep supporting records such as the lease, lawful rent-increase notices, receipts and relevant correspondence.

September 21, 2026 update: Ontario now has a prescribed persistent-late-payment benchmark where rent is received more than 7 days after the due date on at least 3 occasions within a 6-month period. A payment does not count toward that benchmark if it was late solely because the landlord applied the payment to another amount owed. Other circumstances may still support a finding of persistent late payment. This ledger flags entries for planning only; it does not determine whether an N8 is valid.

For a non-payment situation, also review our N4 guide and LTB Notice & Form Finder.

Important: This is an organizational tool, not an official LTB form or legal calculation. Verify rent amounts, dates, service requirements and current Tribunals Ontario instructions before taking legal action.
